Critic’s Rating: 3.5/5
Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Chhapaak’ is inspired by the story of Laxmi Aggarwal. A real-life acid attack Survivor. Who has become a symbol of strength and inspiration for many women. The film is a fictional story, in which Deepika Padukone plays the central character Malati. Who is attacked in broad daylight on the streets of Delhi by a family friend. Bashir Khan aka Bablu and his accomplice.
As the narrative chooses a non-linear path, we first meet Malti when she is on a job hunt – deliberately trying to move through the emotional stains that heinous crime has left her. For physical scars, he has to undergo several complicated surgeries. In fact, away from the dream of being a singer, her life is now an intersection of her work with acid victims, her many surgeries and an NGO for her court cases. Nevertheless, the film does away with melodrama or manipulation, and instead gives us a powerful hero whose resolve to fight is with his determined smile, his aching eyes, and his indomitable spirit.
As an aid on behalf of her family due to her brother’s illness and father’s death, it is Malti’s lawyer Archana (Madhurjeet Sargi), who stands with her through her arduous journey. Her team of women lawyers takes over the system to amend the Acid Violence Act in Malti’s PIL to ban the sale of acid. Her other main support comes from Amol (Vikrant Massey), who appoints her to work for her NGO.
Deepika Padukone is the soul of the film, giving a brilliant, stunning performance. In fact, there are many scenes where her act will leave you in tears – such as where she puts an earring on her face but now realizes she can’t put it on. Or his piercing cry when he sees his face for the first time in a mirror after an attack. And where she tells Amol, “I want to party.” That is exactly why Malti’s character is a winner because at no point does she succumb to self-pity.And as Deepika has fully embraced her character. Her transformation is enhanced through effective prosthetics. Devoid of a hint of glamor, we all see that Malti is all over.
Both Vikrant Massey and Madhurjit Sargi gave very commendable performances. The story sends a strong message and is undoubtedly a daring effort, though the editing seems chopped off in places and parts of the narrative stretch into the second half. Music tracks stand out – tracks’ Chhapak ‘title track and hok Jhok’ adding poignancy to the mood.
You Chhapaak ‘is not a film that lets you go easily, as Malati feels that Malati has managed to get better than her criminal, it reminds you of something serious, uncomfortable.Chhapaak is a sensitive, delicate and powerful film, dealing with heinous crimes against women and an important story that needs to be heard.
