The story is about 10 years before India’s freedom struggle. Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy is depicted as the emperor of the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. Lakshmi is a temple dancer who is also Narasimha’s love interest. After Narasimha expresses his love and promises to marry Lakshmi. Reddy finds out that he is already married to Siddhamma when he was a child due to a ritual that helps rain in the area. The elders convince Reddy to perform the same ritual with Siddhamma again. Which he agrees to for the betterment of the region.
Knowing this, Lakshmi tries to commit suicide. But Reddy convinces her to live and asks her to use her dance form to impress people. Lakshmi realizes this and leaves the Renadu region. Meanwhile, Siddhamma expresses her love for Reddy. Whom she has been hiding since childhood. Reddy is then shown living happily with his mother, wife and other family members. Around the same time, the British East India Company comes to India for business. But soon begins to loot, torture and take back India’s natural wealth to Britain.
When Narasimha Reddy witnesses his atrocities. He becomes furious and leaves his throne, wife, and mother and together with Pallegar, Veera Reddy, Avuku Raju, starts a rebellion against him. A leader of Madras (now Chennai), Raja Pandi, joins him. They all start a rebellion against the British East India Company. Throughout the rest of the film, Reddy, along with all his supporters, fights against British rule.
Narasimha Reddy is the regional administrative and military ruler of Uyalwara. Following the advice of his mentor Gosai Venkanna. He becomes a fierce warrior and leader. Only the ruler is committed to doing the best for his subjects. Although He falls in love with the beautiful dancer, Lakshmi, circumstances force him to marry Siddhamma (Nayantara). Angered by the atrocities being inflicted on his people by the East India Company. He joined hands with other rulers such as Avuku Raju and Raja Pandi to start a rebellion. He not only has to battle the British. But also has to deal with some of his own people. Who are to sabotage their mission. The brave battle of Narasimha Reddy proved to be the inspiration for the Indian rebellion of 1857.
The film is based on an actual story, and like many other themes that stem from historical times, the makers have taken creative liberties to make this one more dramatic. Chiranjeevi is in good form as the leader of the rebellion. The actor proves that he can make even the impossible-looking possible. With an excellent screen presence, Sudeep makes a stunning impression. His chemistry with Chiranjeevi makes you wish for more screen time for the two actors. Both Nayantara and Tamannaah are capable of their parts and do best in the limited scope that they provide their roles. Amitabh Bachchan’s presence is brief. But impressive. The film was released in five languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Unfortunately, it is the writing that reduces the film. Surendra Reddy’s screenplay and direction work at several points in the narrative.
At two hours and 50 minutes, the film is very long and needs strict editing. The dialogues of a subject with such depth definitely need to add more weight. In the second half, the story picks up, and the real action kicks in. Most of the stunts (by Greg Powell, Lee Whitaker, Ram-Laxman and A Vijay) are far from reality, but it makes for a good watch. The music is passable, but the odd lyrics stick out.
Yes, the film is split into parts, but when you’re talking about a rebellion that eventually inspired another movement of epic proportions (the Indian Rebellion of 1857), such a chest-thumping patriotism Does not come as a surprise. While the story has its flaws, one needs to appreciate that the makers pulled this story out of the pages of history and climbed on such a large canvas to see it.
