Movie Plot

Despondent motivational trainer Viju Prasad is hired by a corporate to become a pastor and a miracle-worker of sorts. However, his stunt on live TV puts their entire operation under the scanner. What will the repercussions be?

Movie Review

At a time when religion is the new medicine, Anwar Rashid’s trance has been blinded by faith, blind devotees and skeptics. Ultimately, the film is about a fake clergyman who is just a front for the business operations of corporates, who use money as a driving force to confront money.

Viju Prasad (Fahd), a down-on-luck, motivational trainer, walks from post to column to take care of his younger brother, doing his life’s work. However, things take a serious turn and he is forced to move to Mumbai to make a fresh start. And at this disgusting turn, he gets an offer from two rich men (Gautam Vasudev Menon and Chamban Vinod) to include him as a kind of pastor. Their aim is to create a confrontation of wealth by using trust as a front. Following a crash course in theology, Viju takes on the identity of Pastor Joshua Carlton and his magnetic personality, as well as orchestrated acts of miracles, fueling the curated brand image of a messiah. But a stunt on live TV brings the entire operation under suspicion and the rest of the film follows its impact on Joshua, his bosses and his followers.

Viju as Fahd and a fiery Joshua are the frantic energy that drives the film. She is charismatic as Joshua, and her character is a mirror image of some of the most popular theorists around the world. Gautam Vasudev Menon, Dilesh Pothan as Nilesh Joshua’s mentor Avarachan, and Saubin Shahir as TV journalist Mathew are the other three main characters, which make up the lack needed to balance Fahad’s performance.

Nazia’s role as Esther Lopez is unlike anything done before. As a weed-smoking, alcohol-swilling girl, it is a clean gesture from the bubbly, girl-next-door roles she’s usually associated with. The supporting works of Chamban Vinod and Vinayakan keep the film interesting.

Director Anwar gets the first half of his pacing and content. However, the second half of the script, by Vincent Vadakan, loses steam with the plot, then shows Joshua’s mentality in those scenes. The makers seem to have chosen the style in the latter half. The angle between Esther and Joshua also seemed overwhelming and is a film of about three hours. Vincent however gets points for exposing the dangers of hope that the fake messiah offers to an urban and stylish on a relevant basis.

Amal Neerad’s cinematography in scenes from Kanyakumari and Mumbai, in particular, takes an extra breath of fresh air. As always, the frames are uber-stylish and together with BGM from Sushil Shyam and Jackson Vijayan, trance makes for a generous watch.
