Movie Plot in summary
Chaman Kohli, a 30-year-old college lecturer, has to contend with problems arising from his hair cut, as he often finds himself in insensitive jokes. His family wants to reunite him with a worthy girl, but he is always rejected because of his look. So, will he finally be able to find love?
For Chaman Kohli (Sunny Singh), a Hindi lecturer from Delhi, Jeevan comes across as a series of ridicules. From their students in college to their friends and even their parents, they all make fun of their bald patches. In addition, his parents are in a rush to marry him before he turns 31, as an astrologer predicts that if he is not stopped before that, he will be doomed to a life of celibacy. As much as he detests the idea, he still accepts parental pressure, only to be rejected each time. Even his attempts to find someone almost always fail. In the end, when someone falls in love with him, he is not the ‘type’ he wants to be with.
‘Ujda Chaman’ is the official remake of the 2017 Kannada film da Ondu Mottaya Kathe. While the first half of the film tries to be quirky and comic, the ‘very loud Delhi family’ humor and even loud background score is a serious point. In fact, the background score ensures that there is no scope for subtlety or gentle humor. And the first part ridicules the scene of a bald person following the scene to the point of exhaustion. In the second part, the film turns out to be mostly a play and, perhaps, brings people into the message of accepting who they are for. And is beyond their outer appearance. But overall, it is weak writing that does not extend beyond the germ of the idea that overturns the story.
Sunny Singh tries his best to fit into the role of a Dalit and turns into an innocent charm. But for the most part, his expression remains the same throughout the film (glowing eyes and sad face). After a point it ceases to have any effect. Maanvi Gagroo’s captivating performance has a pleasant screen presence and draw. Sharib Hashmi impresses with a slight role. Karishma Sharma and Aishwarya Sakhuja are effective in their smaller parts.
Overall, ‘Ujra Chaman’ delivers a relevant message, but the ride to achieve it in the end is a bravado.
